Mission for Nutrition

Whether you’re an avid backpacker trekking through the wild country or a busy college student trying to eat better, the new “Mission for Nutrition” program is right for you!

“We’re going to be giving students tips and tricks for cooking simple, nutritious meals,” said Outdoor Adventure and Wellness Coordinator Chris Huebner. “You could easily spend your time in the outdoors eating cheesy snacks, but it wouldn’t be the nutritious meal you’re looking for.”

The program will go over differences between front country and back country cooking techniques, as well as recipe options, seasonal caloric intake recommendations, nutrition, pack weight and more. The SRWC Rock Wall and Outdoor department and Beach Balance are partnering to teach, answer questions and conduct cooking demonstrations during the program.

Nutrition and dietetics majors from Beach Balance will teach and answer questions regarding nutrition and caloric intake, and rock wall student staff will give tips on cooking outdoors, backpacking and more. The program will be taking place on the pool deck on Tuesday, March 7 and Tuesday, March 14, from 5 to 6 p.m. on both days.

“When you go backpacking you can take dehydrated milk or produce from a salad bar rather than a whole gallon or whole onion,” said Chris. “This program will offer a means to learn recipe options and easy meal prep, so you don’t have to sacrifice weight or other things in order to get the food you want.”
