Mindfulness and the Power of Being Intentional

Whether it’s allocating time toward finishing a good book, or taking a much-needed nap, self-care is a revolutionary act in a society that values productivity over well-being. It's evident that self-care has many benefits. Not only can it improve your mental, physical and spiritual health, but it also encourages you to create a balanced routine that you can enjoy.

So, what does self-care look like exactly? That’s entirely up to you! One of the many advantages of self-care is its malleability. You can pick one, or more activities that you genuinely enjoy and fit them into your schedule. Some suggestions include journaling, practicing mindfulness, or reorganizing a living space. Making time for these activities can seem difficult, but it doesn’t have to be! Start by getting a planner or setting self-care reminders on your phone. These can help you feel more balanced and organized each day.

If you feel like your schedule doesn’t allow you to add on an additional activity, practicing mindfulness might be for you! Mindfulness consists of two things: awareness of the present moment and acceptance of what that awareness reveals. It can be as short as five minutes and you can practice it anywhere! Meditation, breathing exercises and reflective journals are all activities that promote mindfulness. Don Miguel Ruiz’s book, The Four Agreements is a great way to discover mindfulness strategies that can enhance your relationship with yourself and others.

With our busy schedules, finding the time to practice self-care can be hard at times, but don’t let this stop you from trying. Remember, self-care is a long-term investment in yourself, and it will pay off. At the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC), we recognize how easy it is to overlook self-care amid the hassles of deadlines, exams and routines. That's why we're hosting Spa Night by the Water on Nov. 2, from 5 to 7 p.m. at the SRWC pool and spa! Decompress with us in an evening filled with DIY spa activities that promote mindfulness and relaxation. We hope to see you there! For more information, visit asirecreation.org/calendar.
