Rock Climbing at Stoney Point Park

Just an hour north of Long Beach in the city of Chatsworth lies one of North America’s great pioneering rock-climbing locations, Stoney Point Park. This natural formation has been a popular spot for climbers since the 1950s, hosting climbing legends such as Royal Robbins and Yvon Chouinard, the founder of the global apparel company, Patagonia.

Being only 40 minutes from Los Angeles, it has also been used as the backdrop of several movies and television series you may recognize, like Seinfeld, The Lone Ranger and Cliffhanger. Historically, this rock formation was home to such groups as the Tongva people in the late 1700s, followed by the Chumash, Fernandeño and Gabrieleño peoples. In 1974, the location was officially designated as a historic and cultural monument and has been maintained and protected by the city of Los Angeles ever since.

Today, the sandstone boulders are considered a proving ground for the newest generation of climbers and outdoor enthusiasts. Stoney Point Park has many popular routes for beginner and experienced climbers. Our recommended climbing areas include Boulder 1, Beethoven’s Wall and the Turlock boulder. If you’re looking to try out some of these historic climbing boulders, make sure you bring a pair of climbing shoes and a crash pad!

All this equipment and more can be rented at the Student Recreation and Wellness Center (SRWC). Feel free to ask our experienced staff about their climbing experiences at Stoney Point Park and around Southern California.
